Do You Like Deer?

Deer. Those beautiful elegant creatures. Those wonderful animals that come into your backyard. Yes, the ones they eat all of your flowers. The ones that leave deer poop all over your backyard.

I don’t like the fact that my grandchildren can’t run around in my backyard because they’ll be stepping in all the deer poop. Let me explain.

Our house backs up to Green Acres. Right at the edge of my property is a stream. Actually it used to be a stream, it has become quite a bit larger. But I digress. In the Green Acres there’s a herd of deer. I’ve seen as many as 25 at one time. I’m sure that dear have a place inthis ecology that we call Earth. I have no idea what it is. My best guess as to why they exist is to help keep the body shops in business.

Needless to say, I don’t like deer.

I can live with them as long as they don’t come on my property, but I don’t like them. So I had to learn how to keep them out of my backyard. Now I really like the view of that stream in my backyard, So I don’t want to enclose my whole back yard with a 6-foot fence. I’ve tried radios that come on with motion sensors. They also shine a bright light when the deer come on the property at night. Well that worked for about two days. I had limited success with some of these products that the deer don’t like the smell of, like dear be gone. It smells absolutely horrible to me for the first few minutes, but then I don’t smell it anymore , But in theory the deer still smell it for a long long time, and it keeps them away. So I tried that with limited results. When it was fresh, it seemed work and kept them away. However when the food started to get scarce, it didn’t bother them at all. They just kept coming onto my property, leaving deer poop all over the place, and eating whatever flowers are still growing in the fall and early winter seasons.

But then my wife, Bunny, read something and we gave it a try. Irish Spring soap. Yes the one that leaves you feeling refreshed like an Irish Spring. We bought some and cut them in half. I donated an old t-shirt to the cause, and we made small bags from the T-shirt material. We put half a bar of Irish Spring soap into each little bag, I hung them from trees about every 30 to 40 feet from each other with a nail. Since I put that up close to 4 months ago, I have not seen a deer in the backyard yet.

Try it and let me know if it works for you.
