Green Grass (and High Tides ) Forever

Remember that old song by The Outlaws? Now you’re finally in your new home. You own a house and you now have a yard. And you want your lawn to be nice and green, like the song. But maybe it isn’t. So here are a few hints to keep that lawn nice and green.

Let’s start off with an easy one. When you buy whatever type of fertilizer you’re going to get, follow the instructions. Especially the little one about how much to put on, which is controlled by the opening in your spreader. Putting on too much fertilizer will burn out the lawn. Too much fertilizer can even kill the grass. And if there’s too much, as it runs off into the waterways, it can cause toxic algae bloom. And that’s not good. So follow the instructions to the letter.

Follow the timing. Late spring is usually a good time for fertilizer to be putting on.

And the lawn needs water. Many people think the more water the better. Sorry, that’s not right. In an ideal situation, you want the soil to be moist up to 6 inches down.

Here’s another tip. Don’t cut your grass too short. It will end up starving the plants and prevent the grass from getting the proper amount of sunlight. Try to never cut it lower than two and a half or 3 inches.

If you are thinking about putting down weed killer, again follow the directions. You don’t need to do the entire lawn with weed killer, you can kill the whole lawn. Just put the weed killer down on areas where it needs it. Here’s a way to kill weeds by not putting down any chemicals. Pour boiling water on the weed.
