If the kids have grown and moved out, should you sell the big house and move to an adult community?
It’s a big decision and there is no answer that will suit everyone.
Have your children settled in and put down roots somewhere? Are they close or far away? Do you want to be near them? Do you prefer to be a few hours or more drive away? Do you want to be close to them?
Decision Factors
These are all questions that factor into your decision. If you want to be near your kids, but they’re too far away to visit often, maybe you can move near them. But if they’re spread all over the country, which one do you move near? You need to answer that, not me. But if you do move, you should look into an adult community. You’ll need a social life with people other than your kids and grands. You’ll have a better chance of making friends in an adult community which is full of people just like you.
But if you don’t want to move near the kids, (and that’s okay) what should you do?
We are in a situation where all four kids are within 8 miles. So we see them and the grands all the time. So if we move, it will be because we want a smaller home. One which will be easier to maintain both inside and out. An adult community would be fine for us in many ways.
Look at the Finances
Financially, an adult community may be the proper decision. but maybe not. Would you still need a mortgage, just not as big as you now have? The taxes would probably be less. However, would the savings on the mortgage and taxes be nullified by the monthly association fee? If not, possibly a smaller house in your neighborhood may be the better option.
