Moving? Don’t Forget to Find a Mover

After finding the perfect home many people get caught up in the excitement of buying their new house. But quite often they neglect to take care of one very important step. And this step is finding a company to move them.

Movers get very busy, especially over the summer. And they are the busiest at the end of the month. So start your search early to find yourself a mover.

One of the most important things that I can recommend is to get recommendations from friends, co-workers and family. Realtors may also have the ability to give recommendations from other clients of theirs.

Look for someone in the area and stay away from movers who advertise on sites like Craigslist. Verify that the mover is licensed. Moving companies must be licensed with the division of Consumer Affairs. If they  perform moving Interstate, they must also be licensed.

Get estimates. Three or more would be good. In New Jersey movers cannot make an estimate over the phone. They need to come to the home and make an estimate and survey the items that you will be needing to move. After all, not all four bedroom homes are the same.

Get a written estimate from the company that you choose to come out. Look out for the low ball estimates. We find that quite often they add on the extras which will add up to an enormously large amounts of money.

Do your research. Look up the company online, check Better Business Bureau,

And move your most valuable possessions yourself. Don’t trust a mover to move money, jewelry and important documents. Have those items safely locked in your car or in a trusted friend’s care. Don’t tempt the workers with an opportunity to take some of your valuables.

Take pictures of your possessions before the movers arrive. Lots of pictures. Then examine your items when they are delivered. If necessary, file a claim ASAP. You may want to consider paying for extra damage coverage, as the basic coverage for damaged items in on 60 cents per pound.
