You’re Wasting Money on your Home Part 2

Wasting Money on your Home

Don’t Waste Money on This

So let’s continue to the next section.

Are you watering your lawn properly?

Many of us water too much. And that wastes both water and the expense of the water. Many experts say you need one deep watering per week. Running a quick watering three or four times a week promotes shallow roots, deep watering makes the root system stronger. Get up early every once in a while to watch the sprinkler system, and make sure you don’t have a broken sprinkler head that’s wasting a lot of water. And check that the sprinkler heads are properly aimed. It does no good to water a fence.

What about the hot water heater?

If you have a tankless water heater, skip to the next section. But if you have a regular hot water heater, the water is kept warm 24/7. Adjust the temperature to the manufacturer’s recommended settings. I’ve seen many that are set too high.

Do you have leaky windows and / or doors?

A draft can allow cold, winter winds to enter the home. The easy solution is to turn up the heat. The better solution is to caulk the window and put weather stripping around the doors to keep those cold winds out.

Do you hire jobs out to a handyman?

Many of the tasks around a home are simple. If you don’t know how to do something research it online. Video tutorials are available for most everything. Doing the jobs yourself can save a lot. But if it takes away time you could use better, than find a good handyman

Look closely at your roof.

If the shingles are curling, or if the wind has blown away a few of the shingles, get them fixed now. Waiting will only make it more costly.
